The “controversial” lesson: active recall and spaced repetition don't work as well as the hype says. The memory model that explains why.

Key ideas

▸Studying (the physical activity) is not the same as learning (the cognitive process). Studying exists to produce learning.
▸Multi-store memory model: sensory → working memory (the “hotel lobby”) → long-term memory. Encoding moves info in; retrieval pulls it out.
▸Encoding needs cognitive load — it feels confusing and uncomfortable. Too little load = passive; too much = overwhelmed.
▸Without retrieval you forget ~50–60% of a fact in a week. Active recall just flattens the forgetting curve.
▸Active recall / spaced repetition have rapidly diminishing returns — great for beginners, sometimes worse for already-strong students.
▸Encoding is trainable via neuroplasticity — there is no “can't be trained” learner.

Build tolerance for the discomfort of cognitive load — that's the “desirable difficulty”.
Don't rely on retrieval alone — fix encoding so the forgetting curve starts flatter (patch the hole in the bucket).
